    • Tasting Notes

      Bergamot tea and mandarin orange zest aromas emerge with black cherry and fresh red Fuji apple notes along with earthy hints of mushroom and Asian five spice. On the palate it’s finely textured with vibrant acidity and additional supporting flavors of lavender, pine and truffle. Quite drinkable at this young stage with tannins present but not overpowering.

    • The Vineyard

      Cobb has been working with this exceptional vineyard since 2003, and have made a single-vineyard wine from its coveted fruit since 2006. We guide all the farming at Rice-Spivak, and have first pick of the grapes we want to work with. People are often surprised to learn that this is our most inland vineyard. Even so, at just six miles from the ocean it is still very much influenced by the marine climate. Made from a combination of Swan and Dijon Noir plantings grown in unique volcanic soils, this is always one of our most profoundly aromatic wines, making it delightful before the first sip is even taken.

      "The Rice-Spivak vineyard, owned by Russell Rice, is a six acre vineyard located in the Sonoma Coast AVA. There is an usually large amount of volcanic ash in the vineyard soils. The 2016 ‘Rice-Spivak Vineyard’ Pinot Noir is a stunning wine that takes on very pretty aromatics with ripe plum, red cherry compote, cran-pomegranate and white truffle oil. The aromatic range is wonderful and takes you back to the glass for more enjoyment. The minerality and weight of the wine is truly outstanding, as is the strong salinity and lip-smacking acidity. Cran-pomegranate, blood orange zest, volcanic earth and peat moss flavors all show some insane range. While this is drinking marvelously right now, the wine will have an exceedingly long life in the cellar."

      “Ross Cobb makes this wine from a vineyard south of Sebastopol, a cool site that ripened to a black intensity in 2016. There are fresh notes of herbs and some stemmy greenness adding pungency in the background, while the foreground is gentle, round and ripe. This needs a year in bottle for those elements to integrate, and will likely benefit from longer aging.”

The palate is light to medium-bodied, smooth and silky on entry, then evolving with savory character and firm structuring tannins, finishing very long and layered."
