Cobb Pinot Noir Diane Cobb: Coastlands Vineyard 2016

    • Tasting Notes

Extremely fragrant with floral lavender and blood orange citrus on the nose along with rich raspberry, red plum, spicy bay laurel, and notes of white pepper. Takes 1-2 hours to open in a decanter, yielding sappy notes and broad tannins. Highly recommended for your long-term cellar program.

    • The Vineyard

My family takes immense pride in the fact that Coastlands was one of the first Pinot Noir vineyards on the far Sonoma Coast. More than just being one of the pioneering vineyards, under the care of my late mother, Diane, a special section of Coastlands was also used as a nursery to explore how different clones of Pinot Noir fared in the extreme conditions of the coast. Featuring vines planted in 1989 and 1996, our Diane Cobb block includes more than 20 clones of Pinot.

    • Accolades

"The Coastlands Vineyard was first planted in 1989 and is located a mere four miles from the Pacific Ocean, having a strong maritime influence. The earthy aromatics take you in with black truffle and peat moss dominating the red fruits and citrus components at the moment. On the mouth, the wine shows a silky texture and unveils a distinctively dark fruit and mineral driven flavor profile. The salinity here is really nice. Delicious now, enjoy this over the next decade or so." Drink 2019-2030
Washington Wine Blog February 2019, Dr. Owen Bargreen - 93 Points

“By the fourth day of tasting this wine, its tough tannins turned lighter, almost airy in their sandstone abrasion, while the spicy notes of strawberry, cranberry and rhubarb turned racy and elegant. Ross Cobb grows this wine at a nursery block of vines his mother planted in 1989, when his parents were just beginning to establish their Coastlands Vineyard. It includes more than 20 selections on their own roots, particularly Jackson Clone 16, one of the more successful at the site (the family later propagated it more extensively in this block). From the crisp details of the delicate fruit to the transformation of the tannins with air, everything points to the coastal complexity this wine will grow into with time.”

"Pale ruby in color, the 2016 Pinot Noir Diane Cobb Coastlands Vineyard has a lovely soft nose of pink peppercorn, dried violet, dried leaves and pipe tobacco with red cherry, cranberry and red berries plus a rocky/smoky note. The palate is light to medium-bodied, with gentle grainy tannins to support the savory fruit and a long, evolving finish."

"The 2016 Diane Cobb: Coastlands Vineyard emerges from mix of 18 different Pinot clones on the property. Not only is the Diane Cobb the most complex wine in this range, it is also has the most structure and pure power. Dark cherry, plum, lavender, rose petal and spice open up in the glass, but only with great reluctance. Readers will have to be patient. The 2016 is a truly special wine in the making."
Antonio Galloni, Vinous Media May 2019 - 95 Points

"Named for the winemaker's late mother, this particular bottling is always a standout. It offers entangled layers of tangerine, strawberry and earthy leather. This is a fine wine to consider cellaring; enjoy 2021–2026."
